Composer's Voice Concert - A Tribute To Composer Liana Alexandra



     Sunday, May 13, 2012 1:00 PM  (NEW YORK, NEW YORK) The Composer's Voice concert series is presenting a tribute to the composer Liana Alexandra. This Composer's Voice features works by Liana Alexandra and composers who were her colleagues,  students, friends, and loved ones.
     Liana Alexandra (1647-2011) was a Romanian composer and pianist born in Bucharest. She received many prizes and awards including  "George Enescu" scholarship, Prize of the Romanian Composers and Musicologists Union on five occasions in 1975, 1979, 1981, 1982, and 1984. In 1979, she received
the first prize in Dresden at the "Carl Maria von Weber Competition." The "Gaudeamus" Foundation prize in 1979 and 1980, and in 1980, she also won the prize of the Romanian Academy.  At the National University of Music of Bucharest, she taught composition, orchestration and musical analysis.  Liana Alexandra was an active and prolific composer supporting the community of new music. She performed as a member of Duo Intermedia and the co-director of the Nuova Musica Consonante-Living Music Foundation Festival and a member of Vox Novus.
     Also featuring works by: Douglas DaSilva,  Serban Nichifor, and  Robert Voisey. Douglas DaSilva whose compositions have been described as "very individual, and to us has a very clear personality" in Classical Guitar Magazine. Composer/cellist Serban Nichifor was husband to Liana Alexandra. Robert Voisey friend and colleague to Liana Alexandra, is the director of Vox Novus, Composers Voice, Fifteen Minutes of Fame, and the 60x60 project.
     This concert will also include composition collaboration between Liana Alexandra, Serban Nichifor, and Nuha Dolby. Nuha Dolby is in sixth grade at the New Explorations in Science, Technology and Math (NEST+m) school; she has taken part in the New York Philharmonic's Very Young Composers program
for more than 2 years,. A composer in her own right, her piece Piano Music was premiered on the September 18, 2011 Composer's Voice concert as part of the Fifteen-Minutes-of-Fame: <15 performed by pianist Sophia Yan.

Performances by Kaoru Ikeda (dancer), Jasmin Bey Cowin (harpist), Nuha Dolby (viola), Midori Witkoski (viola)  Riko Higuma (piano),  and Wonki Lee (saxophone) for Fifteen Minutes of Fame.

Kaoru Ikeda, dancer, choreographer and teacher, originally from Japan, her work is described  as "perfectly realized dance" - (offoffoffdance)

     Pianist Riko Higuma has performed and collaborated with legendary artists such as Albert Markov, Neil Rosenshein, Aaron Rosand, Cho-Liang Lin, Alan Gilbert, Steven Tanenbom, Dora Schwarzberg, and Timothy Eddy. She was a top-prize winner at the Jacob Flier International Piano Competition and was
one of the Young Artists at the Van Cliburn Piano Institute, where she appeared with the Fort Worth Symphony. Individually and as the pianist of the acclaimed Zodiac Trio.

     Korean saxophonist Wonki Lee was born in Tokyo and  was the first Korean selected as a semi-finalist in the Adolphe Sax International Competition. He won 1st prize for MTNA Young Artist NY State Competition, and 3rd prize for the LISMA International Music Competition.

     Fifteen-Minutes-of-Fame performed by Wonki Lee and Riko Higuma - 15 one-minute selections for saxophone and piano dedicated to the composer Liana Alexandra. The fifteen composers included in this selection are: Guido Bisocoli, Gordon Francis Blaney Jr., Scott Brickman, Andy Cohen, David Heuser, Ching-chu Hu, Jose Mora-Jimenez, Wade Meyers, Daniel Mihai, Serban Nichifor, Mike Perdue, Kala Pierson, Josh Ransom, Corina Alexandra Tirziman, and Georgiana Trandafir.
